The majestic staircase built in 1721-1725. The aristocratic staircase, located at the top of the long road leading to the Tiber, was designed in such a way that the pictorial effects gradually intensify as you get closer. Typical of Baroque architecture was the creation of long and deep vistas, culminating in monumental wings. On the sides of the stairs are classic Roman buildings where you can rent luxury apartments with panoramic view of ancient city.
The monumental staircase of 135 steps, commissioned by Cardinal Pierre Guerin de Tensen, was opened by Pope Benedict XIII on the occasion of the Catholic Church's Jubilee Year of 1725: it was built with French funding, starting in 1721 to connect the Bourbon Spanish embassy, to which the square owes its name (which in the 17th century was called "Piazza di Francia"), from the Church of Trinita dei Monti. At the very top of the stairs is Sallust Obelisk has a huge height of 14 meters and is an imitation of obelisks typical of ancient Egypt, installed on the square in 1789.
The Spanish Steps are very popular on Valentine's Day.
